Deming LibraryThe mission of the Whatcom County Library Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 2005, is to promote and enhance the libraries in the Whatcom County Library System through program and capital project funding.  We endeavor to augment, not replace, tax-based support for our libraries through gifts, grants, and bequests from individuals and organizations.  Our aims are to foster intellectual freedom and First Amendment rights and to encourage life-long learning.

Together with the Friends of the Library groups, which are organized in each community to promote the local branch of the library, the Foundation demonstrates local support of, and value placed on area library service.

New Board Member Needed - The Foundation is seeking a new board member. The goals of the Foundation include building awareness of library services and financial concerns in the community, fundraising, and networking with community organizations on behalf of the library.  If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity in support of the Whatcom County Libraries or would like more information, send an email to Lizz Roberts or call 384-3150 x220.

Spring 2010 Grants Announced

The Foundation is pleased to announce grant awards for the spring 2010 grant cycle.  The grants will fund a Parent and Child reading program to inmates at the county jail, reading incentives for Teen Summer Reading, and the Annual Poetry Festival; Poetry Sings - provided by the Friends of the Ferndale Library.

Reading For Others - A Jail Family Program will help inmates connect with their children through reading the same book and discussing it together.  The Foundation grant of $500 will fund books and program supplies.

Poetry Reigns & Reins & Rains!  The 5th Annual Ferndale Poetry Festival was awarded $500.  The Festival merges the talents of local established authors with community youth to support both the art and joy of reading and writing.  This two-day event, held in during National Poetry Month, is scheduled for April 22nd and 29th. More information and a form for submissions is found on the Friends of the Ferndale Library site.   This is the first WCLF grant to the Ferndale area.

Teen Services at WCLS will focus their project efforts on reaching reluctant readers by offering incentives and prizes for reading over the summer.  The grant of $500 will join with many donations from area businesses to provide attractive incentives to keep kids reading during the all-important summer gap.

Activities Supported by the Foundation

baby with bookRaise a Reader - This program was adopted by the Foundation in 2005, having previously been supported through donations to WCLS. This project provides a book, resources and support to help families of newborn infants born at St. Joseph 's Hospital make reading an important part of a child's development from birth to six years.

Ad Campaign for Reference - Libraries offer amazing services, the trick is letting everyone out there know what is available. In 2007, WCLF funded an ad campaign to get the word out about reference services at WCLS.

Library Building Projects - the county is growing, and that means increased library use. WCLF has supported the fundraising efforts of the Deming Library and the future North Fork Regional Library.
