WCLS supports both parents and educators with fun, library-created learning resources to help children become their best selves.
We believe parents are a child’s first and best teacher. Early Literacy Kits (for ages birth through 5) help parents understand and use the five practices that help prepare children for literacy: Talking, Singing, Playing, Reading, and Writing. These kits are filled with books, activities, games and information for adults.
Our People of the Salish Sea Curriculum Kits introduce students to the Coast Salish People, past and present, with a special focus on Lummi Nation and the Nooksack Tribe. Created in consultation with local native tribes, the Whatcom Museum, Northwest Indian College staff, and Western Washington University, these kits bring the culture and history of Coast Salish peoples to life. Each kit contains a full curriculum with lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, and links to online resources, along with a set of physical artifacts.
VISITS FROM THE LIBRARY
We’ll come to you! Whether it’s a school book talk, a speaker request, or simply setting up a table at your event, we’d like to partner with you. Call your library for more information or to request a visit to your school.
VISITS TO THE LIBRARY
Bring your classroom, troop, or other group to the library. We’ll show you around, make sure everyone has a library card, and help kids and teens find their next great read. Hear a story. Take a quick tour. Check out books (if desired). Explore resources on specific topics. Learn how the library works! Call your local branch today to schedule a visit and get permission forms and library card applications as needed, or print the forms below.
In addition to the tours, special collections, and kits listed above, WCLS has worked closely with the Whatcom Homeschool Association to provide resources for Homeschool Educators.
Your library card gives you access to online resources providing homework help. Many of our libraries have meeting rooms that can be reserved online or in person for your classes. You can even email or live chat with a librarian 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via Ask A Librarian.
We know you’re busy, so we’ve searched our catalog for you and curated our collection to provide you resources for home schooling, curriculum planning, preschool education, and parent participation education. We love your questions, too, so let us know if there’s something specific you’re looking for that you can’t find!
