After three tours in Iraq, Dave Cartwright is back in his rural Washington home, but feels disconnected from the community, frustrated and angry at society, and despondent about the recent loss of his wife to a car accident. His response is to retreat off-the-grid to North Cascades backcountry with his seven-year-old daughter, Bella, much to the concern of their extended family.
