Hi, I’m Thomas. I like stories about characters who feel real and complex and maybe even a little bit strange. I also like scary books, funny books, and picture books with lots of colorful illustrations.

What’s the first book you remember?

Probably something by Maurice Sendak, who was a staple in my family’s picture book repertoire. I have a very early memory of my sister, my cousin, and myself sneaking up the stairs of my grandparents’ house to freak ourselves out with their old copy of Outside, Over There.

What did you like to read when you were young?

My all-time favorite series was, and still is, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. My mom used to read these books aloud to me and my sister as we took long ferry rides between the San Juan Islands. I remember feeling so proud when I was old enough to read them by myself! I also loved Harry Potter, the Boxcar Children, and anything by Beverly Cleary (especially the Ramona books).

Where is your favorite spot to read?

In the sun and by the water.
