Lady Tan’s Circle of Women

Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See

“Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” is the latest work of historical fiction from acclaimed author Lisa See. Inspired by the true story of a 15th century female physician in China, the novel follows the life of Tan Yunxian from her sheltered youth to her impactful old age. See crafts a moving tale of richly developed characters, opening a window into a time and place both foreign and remarkably familiar.

The daughter of aristocrats, Yunxian was born into a family where the men rose to prominence through service to the emperor. Following the untimely death of her mother, she is sent to be raised by her grandparents, both of whom are highly respected physicians. The story unfolds as Yunxian adjusts to this new world, gaining medical knowledge and forming a deep, life-altering friendship with Meiling, a local midwife’s daughter. However, her journey takes a sharp turn when she is forced to marry and adapt to the rigid confines of her new mother-in-law’s household.

Yunxian is a headstrong and resilient protagonist. Though faced with staggering obstacles, she finds ways to subvert the power structures around her. While it was frowned upon for a woman of her stature to practice medicine, Yunxian’s wisdom, persistence and the support of her “circle of women” help her gain the proficiency to become a physician of great renown.

“Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” touches on themes that resonate today: misogyny, social stratification, the allure of fame and the enduring power of female friendship. See’s story is historically rich and emotionally resonant, reminding us that while centuries may pass, human nature and the struggle for agency remain unchanged.
