County Library Announces the Opening of Northwest Drive Library Express
Whatcom County Library System (WCLS) is pleased to announce the opening of a new and convenient location for picking up items place on hold – the Northwest Drive Library Express. Located at 5205 Northwest Drive, near the corner of Northwest Drive and Smith Road, WCLS celebrated the opening with a brief ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday, March 8.
Christine Perkins, WCLS Executive Director, is excited by the possibilities inherent in this new service. “Kids’ carpool duty just got a little bit more rewarding, since families en route to or from the Northwest Soccer Park can now stop at the Library Express to pick up library materials placed on hold and return ones they’re done with,” said Perkins. “You might actually look forward to practices when you can place any item in the library collection on hold and have it sent to this convenient location for pickup.”
The Library Express is for holds pickup only at this time, and is not a full-service library. To go there and check out items, they must be placed on hold first, choosing “Northwest Dr Express” as the hold pickup location.
“The Library Express is our latest experiment to see how we can make accessing library services easier and more convenient,” said WCLS Deputy Director Michael Cox. “This location is especially convenient for residents in the Laurel area, Windward High School students and staff, and employees at the Whatcom County Annex.”
A library card is the key to access the Library Express. Patrons gain entry by simply scanning their library barcode using the scanner at the door. Once inside, items are shelved alphabetically by last name and can be checked out using the checkout workstation. If patrons have questions or need assistance, a phone is conveniently available to talk with staff at an open WCLS library for help.
The Northwest Drive Library Express is open the same hours as the Ferndale and Lynden libraries; Monday – Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. WCLS hopes patrons will give it a try the next time they’re in the neighborhood!
