Although library buildings remain closed to the public, the Whatcom County Library System is offering a wide range of services, including curbside pickup of library materials, free WiFi access from branch parking lots, and online Summer Reading programs. Here is an overview of current library services.
Curbside pickup of library materials: Using your library card number and PIN, you can access your online account at wcls.org. Reserve books and other library materials from the catalog – commonly called “placing a hold.” Library staff will contact you to schedule a no-contact pickup time. Your items are packaged in a paper bag to streamline handling. Learn more and watch how-to videos at wcls.org/info.
To-go bags: Looking for recommendations of books, DVDs, or other library materials? Call your branch or the main number, (360) 305-3600. Library staff will ask about your interests and create a to-go bag just for you. Please allow 24 hours for fulfillment.
Book returns are open: Book returns located at our library branches are open. Drive-up and community-based book returns in Acme, Birch Bay, Glenhaven, Hinotes Corner, Lake Samish, Maple Falls, Sudden Valley and Wickersham are open; others remain closed. The library is not accepting book donations at this time. Based on current research to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, library materials will be quarantined for four days before staff return them to circulation.
WiFi: Drive-up WiFi wireless internet service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the week at all WCLS branches with two exceptions. At the Ferndale Library, WiFi service is available from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. At the Everson McBeath Community Library, WiFi is available between 6:00 a.m. and 10 p.m. Community members do not need a library card to access the internet, but they may need a card to use digital content and resources. Patrons may use their own wireless devices to access our wireless service.
Laptop access: Beginning Aug. 4, library cardholders may check out and use library laptops for up to one hour per day in their personal vehicles or other spaces outside the library building. This service is limited due to laptop battery life and availability of equipment.
Printing services: Need to print a document? Library cardholders may call their local branch to arrange printing services and curbside pickup of their documents.
Summer Reading program: Early readers, kids, teens and adults can take part any time through Sept. 30 by downloading a Summer Reading Bingo card, setting a goal and winning a prize. We will happily mail Bingo cards or add them to curbside pickup bags. There’s also a great line-up of Summer Reading online events for kids and teens. Visit wcls.org/summer.
