County Library Kicks-off “Pet Selfie” Campaign for Library Card Sign-up Month

#WCLSPetSelfie promotion aims to break WCLS’s record for most card sign-ups ever.

September 6, 2017 (Bellingham, WA) — As part of National Library Card Sign-Up Month, the Whatcom County Library System (WCLS) is encouraging the community to take “WCLS Pet Selfies” and help the library hit 1,000 library card sign-ups—their most ever.

To participate, a person takes a photo of or with their pet engaging with a library item (i.e. reading a book, watching a DVD, listening to music, etc.), posts it publicly to Facebook and/or Instagram with the hashtag #WCLSPetSelfie, tags three friends to do the same, and then signs up for a WCLS library card.

The promotion runs from September 6-30; during that time, participants with the most “likes” on their posts will be featured in WCLS’s weekly email newsletter. At the end of the month, patrons will get to vote on their favorite photo and the winner will get a free custom photo shoot with their pet at WCLS.

“Whatcom County people love their pets, so what better way to combine their love of animals with their support for the library?” Christine Perkins, WCLS executive director, said. “This promotion offers a fun way for people of all ages to support the library and encourage their friends to sign-up for WCLS cards.”

Last year, WCLS celebrated library card sign-up month with a similar effort called “The #BookBrainChallenge.” The challenge was a big success—engaging hundreds of local citizens, including elected officials and business leaders, and breaking the record for most card sign-ups ever by 26%. “We’re hoping to break the record again, while promoting the valuable services you’ll get with a WCLS library card, including eBooks, digital magazines, DVDs, story times and interesting programs for all ages, and more,” Perkins said.

The #WCLSPetSelfie campaign is another inventive promotion launched by WCLS. This summer, WCLS won three national library awards for marketing, including the John Cotton Dana Award, which came with a $10,000 prize.
