Where is Whitehorn? Print

The small community of Whitehorn, marking the southernmost entrance to Birch Bay, was originally settled by mostly Icelanders and Scandinavians.  Gudny Thorleifsdottir Lee, one of the original settlers of Whitehorn, is even considered the second Icelander to settle in Whatcom County.

Whitehorn, although never platted, was home to more than 60 residents.  Its history is quite unique; including a scandal involving a Blasting Powder Plant built, but never going into production due to a financial mishap.  Few reminders are left of Whitehorn, except the building that was once a Mennonite church.  In 2009 Whatcom County Parks opened Whitehorn Marine Reserve.  To read more about this curious community visit the Whitehorn  list found under user whatcomlocalhistory’s lists.
