South Whatcom Library - Construction Begins! Print Email

FOSVL logoJune and was a memorable month for the Friends of the Sudden Valley Library (FoSVL) with 2 fundraising events and the beginning of construction of the new South Whatcom Library.

Pearl Django rocked the house (or rather, the barn at Sudden Valley) with lively gypsy jazz as the second in the four concert series, World of Jazz Builds a Library.  The Dance Barn was overflowing with jazz fans that enjoyed every minute of the concert and called for more.  The series will continue in the fall with Jovino Santos Neto on October 13 and Greta Matassa on December 8.

Dressed for the LuauThe FoSVL primary fundraising event for 2012 was the Luau and Auction on June 23.  Again, the Dance Barn was filled to the rafters with supporters who came dressed in their brightest island clothes, and were ready to bid on silent auction and live auction items, as well as a dessert dash.  The Bellingham Ukulele Group and hula dancer Abby Staten provided tropical entertainment for the partiers. Total proceeds from the luau are just over $30,000, which provided a great boost to the building fund.

Building permit arrivalMore exciting news came with an award of a generous $100,000 grant to the building fund.  And now, the Friends are starting to use the building fund!  FoSVL brought home their Whatcom County building permit on June 30 and work on the new library has begun with the pouring of concrete foundation footings in preparation for the floor.  Congratulations, Sudden Valley Friends!
