Knit-In Brings Monster Author to Sumas Print

Knitting projectThe Friends of the Sumas Library (FOSL) are reaching out to the local knitting community to plan their first annual Knit-In. Suggested by Sumas Library Manager Karin Schulhauser, the Knit-In will feature keynote speaker Rebecca Danger,

Rebecca Dangerlocal author of The Big Book of Knitted Monsters: Mischievous, Lovable Toys and Knit a Monster Nursery: Practical and Playful Knitted Baby Patterns. Rebecca believes that knitting is a lifestyle, not just a hobby. Rebecca really, really, really likes to knit; in 2009, when she started knitting rather obsessively, she began writing down patterns for her original knitted toy designs and decided to publish them.  She lives in Blaine with her family.

The Friends group supports the Sumas Library by providing funds for library programs and purchases that the Whatcom County Library System’s budget doesn’t stretch to cover, such as the new rug for the teen area and toys for the Play and Learn toddler program. Although none of the members of the FOSL knit, the Sumas Library has a very well established weekly knitting group. FOSL hope that the Knit-In will help to raise their visibility in the community and possibly attract members to their group, as well as showcase the library’s knitting resources.

Book of Knitted Monsters“We are excited about this event,” said Cayla Samms, president of the Sumas Friends. “We feel it is a unique and fun event idea. We hope the knitting community enjoys this event so we can make it an annual thing and grow it each year!”

The Knit-In will be held Saturday, September 21, 9 am - noon at the Sumas Senior Center located right across the hall from the Sumas Library. Morning refreshments will be followed by the keynote speaker. Rebecca Danger will be available for book signing and conversation after her presentation. Door prizes will be provided by local yarn and sewing shops. The Knit-In is free. Donations in support of FOSL are welcome.

In addition to events such as the Knit-In, FOSL has raised money through book sales, cookie sales and flower bulb sales. This month they are unveiling their new logo which is printed on reusable bags available for purchase at the Sumas Library for $3. Purchasers of bags can fill them with used books from the FOSL Book Sale Corner located in the lobby outside the library. As with all Friends’ fundraisers, proceeds support programs and purchases for the Sumas Library.
