Ask
a Librarian
Staff
at all of the Whatcom County Library System branches and bookmobile
are dedicated and trained to help you find the materials and
the information you are looking for. If branch resources are
not enough, the staff may refer your question to the System
Reference Center.
The reference
staff can help you find answers. Some recent questions answered:
- My
eight year old son is having a tonsillectomy; would you
put some books on hold for him, so he will know what to
expect?
- Can
you find drawings of the B-36 bomber for me?
- Can
I receive the radio program "Laura Lee" on a local
station?
- Can
you find business information about a company in England?
- Can
you find information about the comedian "Carrot Top"?
The System
Reference Center has:
- Certified
and experienced librarians
- Alldata
Auto Repair and Ancestry.com online resources (only available
at the Lynden Public Library)
- A reader-printer
to use with microformats
- Additional
reference items not available in other Whatcom County library
branches
- When
you check out materials, ask staff for a printout of all
the materials that you have checked out.
- On
the Library catalog main menu, select Your patron record.
Check the list of what you have out, and when it is due.
- You
can renew your own materials from your patron record, if
no other person has placed a hold on the title. Only one
renewal is permitted.
- Call
any library and request telephone renewal, if you need more
time.
- Mark
your calendar with the due date as a reminder.
- Keep
your library materials in a special place at home so that
they are easier to find.
- Books
can be dropped off at any of our libraries, bookmobile stops
in Acme, South Bay and Sudden Valley, at the Bellingham
Public Library or at Haggen's grocery stores on Meridian,
in Barkley Village, and in Sehome.
- The
Ferndale Library has a magnifier to enlarge print (enlarges
about 6 times).
- Spoken
recordings, books on tape, are available at every library.
A special index to them is available on our DYNIX catalog.
- Large-type
books are available at every library. This material has
a special index on DYNIX, so you can find large-type books
by title, author, or subject.
- Library
staff can help you sign up for the services of the Washington
Talking Book and Braille Library, to receive a free steady
supply of materials from this state agency. Dyslexic persons
are qualified for this Washington state service. Contact
your local library. See Branches & Bookmobile for locations and telephone
numbers.
- WCLS
Outreach Services can
provide additional help for people who find it difficult
to use a library.
