April is National Poetry Month! A national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month's goals are to give poetry and American poets the attention they deserve through programs, events, and the media.
National Poetry Month at WCLS kicks off with the Ferndale Library's 7th Annual Poetry Festival: Poetry Runs Wild! April 12. Really two events in one, the kid's poetry festival is from 4-6 pm; teens and adults gather from 6:30-8:30 pm. Both events include a featured poet and an opportunity to read poetry aloud.
This year's WCLS teen poetry contest winners gather for a Poetry Workshop with award winning local poet, Jim Bertolino Saturday, April 14, from 4-6 pm. Teens, if you haven't reserved your spot, contact Katrina Carabba at the Deming Library, 360-582-2422.
What does a beret, dark sunglasses, and black turtle neck symbolize? Poetry Slam at the Ferndale Library Teen Book Club, Monday, April 16, 4-6 pm. Teens are encouraged to bring their poems to read aloud. Iced coffee and scones will be provided. Berets and sunglasses are optional.
If Everson is closer, teens can read their poems at the Teen Poetry Slam at the Everson Library, Wednesday, April 18, 5-6:30 pm. Teens who read will later receive their poems in a small book to keep. More information at the Everson Library 360-966-5100.
Favorite poems and poets will be the topic of discussion at the Ferndale Friends Book Club in honor of National Poetry Month, Monday, April 23rd, 7-8:45. Everyone is welcome to attend this open book group.
Local poets Bill Snow and Lois Holub will share their original poems in an ongoing series of Foothills Poetry at the Deming Library, Friday, April 27, 7-9 pm. Sponsored by the Friends of the Deming Library. Refreshments and conversation follow the poetry reading
