Whatcom County Library System (WCLS) is excited to announce that the bid documents have been released by the Point Roberts Park and Recreation District for construction of the new Point Roberts Library. For details, go to http://www.wcls.org/invitation-to-bid-point-roberts-library-construction.
The Friends of the Point Roberts Library have been raising funds to construct a 2,500 square foot library next door to their current (much smaller) location since 2012. The WCLS Board of Trustees is pleased to say that thanks to an agreement between the Point Roberts Park and Recreation District, the Friends, and Whatcom County Library System, the Friends’ dream is one step closer to reality.
The new building will include “Library Express” service. Library cardholders will be able to scan their cards for entry into the lobby of the building, where they can pick up and check out items that they have put on hold, even on days or times the Point Roberts Library is closed.
Currently, the library occupies 900 square feet in the Point Roberts Community Center at 1487 Gulf Road, which is owned by the Park District. The new library, to be located next door, will be three times larger. The Whatcom County Library System will provide staff, services, library materials, and furnishings for the new space.
“Congratulations to all who have been active in this process,” said WCLS Executive Director Christine Perkins. “The new library will be a gem for everyone who lives in Point Roberts or who visits the area.”
