|New Executive Director of WCLS|
Exciting news! The Board of Trustees of the Whatcom County Library System (WCLS) has hired Christine Perkins as the new executive director. Christine will start mid-April, bringing her extensive management experience and enthusiasm to lead staff as WCLS implements the new community-based strategic framework.
“It’s a great time to join the Whatcom County Library System,” said Christine. “There are several exciting building projects in the works, the WCLS Strategic Framework is in place, and library use is at an all-time high.”
Christine is eager to get to know the Whatcom County Library System better. “I look forward to spending time in all our libraries and communities across Whatcom County – from Point Roberts to Sudden Valley, Sumas to Lummi Island,” she said. “I want to connect with library users and hear about the ways Whatcom County libraries transforms their lives. I also want to meet with non-users and find out how we can meet their needs. I can’t wait to get started!”
As the assistant director of the Bellingham Public Library (BPL) for the past 5 years, Christine was in charge of daily operations, opened the Barkley Branch through a public/private partnership, and led rebranding and public relations efforts. Previous to BPL, Christine served as the director of the Burlington Public Library where she convinced their city council to build a new facility and led the Library Design Committee to replace the old 4,000 square foot building with a 22,000 square foot library. She also established the Burlington Library Foundation which raised over $100,000 in its first year.
Christine started her library career as a children’s librarian and worked her way into the position of department head for young adult services at Jackson County Library Services in Medford, Oregon before moving into library administration. Her experience will be useful as WCLS focuses on early learning initiatives in the Strategic Framework.
Coming from the library “next door,” Christine has the advantage of knowing a lot about WCLS and our partnership with the city library. “I feel very fortunate to be able to continue collaborating with the staff from both library systems to provide the seamless, high quality customer service our library users have grown to expect,” she said.
The Board of Trustees and library staff hopes you’ll join us in welcoming Christine Perkins to the Whatcom County Library System!
