People of the Salish Sea - Classroom Curriculum Kits
People of the Salish Sea is a set of three locally-created curriculum kits that introduce students to the Coast Salish People, past and present, with special focus upon Lummi Nation and the Nooksack Tribe.  The three kits are: The People, Food as Culture, and Canoes and the Canoe Journey.

Salish Sea Kits
  • Kit Resources are available online for advance preparation or stand-alone use:  All lesson plans and other print resources associated with the People of the Salish Sea kits are online here.  When a lesson has video content, "Complete Kit Contents" tells you how to find it online. The Powerpoint presentations are at http://goo.gl/0j4Yg
  •  Teachers are also encouraged to make use of the online resource Since Time immemorial: Tribal Sovereignty in Washington State at the OSPI website www.indian-ed.org
  • Checking out the Physical Kits:  These kits are for classroom use only.  Teachers may reserve them by emailing Catherine Sarette.
  • Kit Contents: The physical kits contain lesson plans, book sets for students, resource material for teachers, art prints, furs, hand-carved models of canoes, and more.  The target level is 3rd grade, but elements of the kits have been used with students from preschool to high school.
  • You can request individual teacher resources and some of the books for students from the general library collection through the library catalog.
The kits were developed through a grant from the Washington State Library with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
