SUPPORT SERVICES COORDINATOR (TEMPORARY)

DEPARTMENT: Support Services

POSTING DATES: THURSDAY, 05/01/08 – WEDNESDAY, 05/21/2008

SALARY: $21.59 per hour (Pay Level 10)

WORKING HOURS: 30 hours per week, flexible schedule during regular business hours.

DURATION: 7-month temporary position to begin on or about June 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008.

LOCATION: Library Central Services, 5205 Northwest Drive, Bellingham, WA 98226 with occasional travel to WCLS Branches.

DUTIES:

Provides interim leadership to the Support Services department which handles acquisitions, cataloging, serials, and processing of Library materials system-wide, Interlibrary loan, and the processing, handling and delivery of library materials to and from system branches and the Bellingham Public Library; reviews department organization, procedures and processes; identifies potential efficiencies; designs and implements plans for future department organization and leadership.
Essential functions include:

• Support Services operations: Leads the Support Services department with vision; encouraging efficiencies, innovation, and teamwork. Provides interim supervision for all the operations of the Support Services department, including acquisitions, cataloging, processing, serials, distribution of library materials, Interlibrary loan, and centralized circulation activities such as system-wide status reports, snags, staff circulation, damaged materials.

• Planning: Evaluates and reviews Support Services department organization, procedures, work assignments and needs, and develops at least two plans for future department organization and leadership that maximize efficiencies and effectiveness.

• Budgeting: Develops the annual budget for Support Services department; develops projections of needs and expenses; recommends budget adjustments; authorizes and monitors departmental expenses. Balances acquisitions fund accounts against library system fund accounts monthly.

• Staff supervision: Develops and guides Support Services staff toward the highest standards of library services. Supervises staff; keeps staff informed on work related procedures. Oversees the selection, training, recognition, discipline and professional development of staff.

• Distribution services: Supervises the delivery of library materials including packing, unpacking, and distribution; creates/manages delivery routes and schedules; arranges for substitute drivers as needed; orders supplies and furnishings as needed.

• Promotes core Library values: supports intellectual freedom. Assumes responsibility for how library is perceived by the staff and the public. Provides leadership to the Library though collaborative problem solving.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Development, Human Resources or related field; and
2. Three years or more increasingly responsible relevant experience; public library experience preferred; or
3. Equivalent combination of technical training, education, and/or experience.
4. Strong supervisory skills with a demonstrated ability to create a positive work environment for staff with varying degrees of experience and responsibilities, and evidence of ability to build a cohesive team.
5. Understanding of new and emerging technologies.
6. New employees are subject to a CRC (criminal records check) per RCW 43.43.832.
