Creating a Peaceful Community Print Email

WCLS Teen Services Coordinator Aubri Keleman and the Juvenile Detention Center School's Book Club were awarded a Peace Builder award in the Program category...

for actively contributing "to the creation of a peaceful community" at the Whatcom Dispute Resolution's award gala in November.

For five mornings each month WCLS public library staff visit with a group of teens to read aloud together and discuss a book. JDC School staff Suzanne Harris and Lani Brogan are active participants in the book group, encouraging teens to discuss and write down their thoughts.

Recent book group facilitator Julie Addis-Smith believes the book group reaches teens in a special way. “It seems clear to me that these discussions are a real opportunity to build empathy, to see things through another’s eyes,” said Addis-Smith.

WCLS recently presented the Golden Apple award to JDC School staff Suzanne Harris and Lani Brogan to honor their work to actively build connections between books and young people.
