If you have a talent and a desire for working with children in a library setting, please consider volunteering for Preschool Storytime or our school-age programs.
Pre-School and Toddler Story Times
We are always looking for talented people to join our team of volunteer storytellers.
We look for volunteers over the age of seventeen who enjoy young children and children's literature, and who have clear, expressive reading voices. Current volunteers are teachers, parents, grandparents, book lovers and other creative people.
Story Time is a half--hour program of stories and activities that introduce preschoolers and toddlers to the delight of the library. Story times are held on various weekday mornings at the Blaine, Deming, Everson, Ferndale, Lummi Island, Lynden, Maple Falls, and Point Roberts Libraries. Volunteers sign up for as many sessions as their time allows (once a week, once a month, once a quarter, etc).
The library supports the volunteer program with an initial training session, yearly workshops, a story time handbook , a theme handbook, and a special collection of books, puppets, flannel stories, and more.
To volunteer, please follow the steps outlined on our flyer. Questions? Contact Theresa Hadley at 384-3150, ext. 256 or talk to your local librarian.
Programs for Grade School Children
Volunteers for grade school programs share their talents, knowledge, or special interests in hour-long after-school or Saturday programs at any of our branch libraries.
If they wish to, volunteers can create their own programs in consultation with the Youth Services staff. Past volunteers have shared their expertise in programs such as arts and crafts, beekeeping, robots, miniatures, animals and science.
We are also looking for volunteers who are willing to host a program created by the staff or to assist the staff with programs. Opportunities of this kind include mask making, holiday crafts, and assisting at puppet shows.
To volunteer, contact Tammy LaPlante at 384-3150, ext. 219 or talk to your local librarian.
